MEXICO CITY.- This Thursday, during his usual morning press conference, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardolamented “the criminalization of migrants” by emphasizing that “People don’t migrate for pleasure”given the recent accusations against these communities by leaders such as the US president, Donald Trumpand the elected president of Chile, José Antonio Kast.

Within the framework of International Migrant DayClaudia Sheinbaum insisted that most do it “out of necessity” and that, therefore, the Government of Mexico “will never agree with actions that criminalize migrants.”

She continued: “Not only is it an act of little humanity, but it generates problems, we have always stated since the (Fourth) Transformation that the best way to reduce migration is to invest in countries, help, protect people, avoid poverty, inequality,” said the president.

“Our position is that there must always be cooperation for the development of any country towards another and, at the same time, the protection of migrants and always provide an alternative,” explained the head of the Executive.

He reiterated that this “will always be the position” of the North American country and recalled that throughout his mandate he has sought to provide “alternatives” to this community through offers of “employment or repatriation,” in case they want it.

Trump’s message against migrants

The response from the Mexican leader comes after being questioned by the Mexican media about her position regarding the speech given by Trump Wednesday night where it began attacking immigrantsand in which he also assured that thanks to the deportations of the United States, in a few months this country has gone “from the worst to the best.”

Claudia Sheinbaum also spoke after the election of the president of Chile, José Antonio Kastwho defends measures inspired by Trump such as the construction of walls and strips on the Chilean borders, as well as the mass expulsion of undocumented immigrants who are in the country.

145,537 Mexicans repatriated from the US

The Government of Mexico accumulates 145,537 repatriations of Mexicans from the United States from January 20 – when Trump returned to the White House and toughened the anti-immigration policy – to December 17.
