The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) has once again established itself as the leading institution for veterans in the USA. For the third year in a row, the university was named a top college for veterans by Military Times. This recognition is based on a comprehensive assessment of academic quality, student support services, affordability and veteran outcomes.
Military Times, a respected military publication, has conducted annual rankings since 2010 to help veterans make decisions about their career plans and the use of their educational benefits. This year, 357 institutions were ranked nationwide. UIW stands out for its dedicated academic support services for military-connected students, including active duty members, veterans, National Guard and Reserve members and their families.
A notable program at UIW is the Peer Advisors for Veterans Education program, which pairs new military-connected students with trained peer mentors to help them navigate academic expectations and build confidence in the classroom. Most of these services are provided through UIW’s Military and Veterans Center, which serves as a central point of contact for military-connected students and organizes annual events such as Veterans Day and military commendations.
The significance of this award is underscored by the words of UIW President Thomas Evans, who emphasizes that the University’s true commitment to supporting military-connected students lies in their commitment and success during their time at UIW and beyond. The university reported a total of 9,188 students for the fall 2025 semester, with nearly one in five students being military-affiliated.
Angelo State University in Texas ranked second in the U.S., followed by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida. Texas Tech, the University of North Texas and Texas State University are also in the top 50 best universities for veterans.
