Recently, two senior state officials joined volunteers in Gettysburg to underscore the increasing demand and increase efforts to support veterans and active military members. The event took place at Gettysburg Rec Park, where volunteers handed out boxes of milk, apples, potatoes and other Pennsylvania-grown foods.
Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding and Pennsylvania Air National Guard Chief of Staff Brigadier General Lynn Lee visited the Adams County MilitaryShare distribution site to help unload trucks and pack food boxes. Her visit highlighted the Shapiro Administration’s increased investment in food security programs across the state, particularly in the lead-up to Thanksgiving.
Redding emphasized that military and veteran families have sacrificed much for society and it is important to ensure they have access to fresh and healthy food. The increasing demand for food assistance is described as historic, and the current state budget includes an $11 million increase in funding for food security initiatives.
Inside the Rec Park distribution area, volunteers and officials worked side by side to stack dairy products, butter, yogurt and fruit, most of which were sourced from nearby farms through the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System (PASS). Redding explained to volunteers how PASS purchases Pennsylvania agricultural products that would otherwise not be available at retail and directs them to food banks.
More than 9 percent of households receiving food assistance in central Pennsylvania include a current or former member of the U.S. military. MilitaryShare, created by the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, currently operates 28 distribution sites in 27 counties, serving more than 45,000 people annually.
The distribution site at Gettysburg Rec Park provides veterans and active military families with boxes of fresh, nutritious food, distributed with dignity and privacy. Maj. Gen. John Pippy, Pennsylvania’s adjutant general, said caring for military families is critical to caring for soldiers themselves.
During the visit, Redding and Lee met families picking up groceries and spoke with staff about the increasing needs in Adams County. Volunteers reported that local needs were increasing and even farmers markets that recently closed for the season were dedicating a significant portion of their budgets to supporting neighbors in need.
Redding expressed hope that visits like the one in Gettysburg will help give residents a better understanding of both the supply chain and the people behind it — the families who receive food and the farmers who grow it. One attendee summed up the mood at the Rec Park distribution: “There’s certainly enough food to feed everyone. It’s just a matter of getting it to the people who need it.”
