During a press conference held this Sunday, the head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Omar García Harfuch, denied that there are indications that the Miss Universe pageant is financed by organized crime.
“We have no indication that there is money from organized crime in the Miss Universe contest, we do not have it, nor do we have anything related to it that has to do with the contest, as such in the contest, with the corresponding investigations”stated the official.
García Harfuch’s statements occur after an alleged criminal network was revealed last week, in which the owner of the Miss Universe brand, Raúl Rocha Cantú, would be involved.

Questioned about said investigation, the official specified that the investigations led to 13 arrest warrants, including that of Rocha Cantú, in “full coordination” with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).
“It was a joint investigation between the Prosecutor’s Office itself, the Security Secretariat and the institutions that make up the Security Cabinet. We all contributed information for this investigation”he assured.
Last Wednesday, one day before the now former Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero resigned, The FGR confirmed that it is investigating Rocha Cantú as part of a case of alleged links to organized crime, particularly drug trafficking, huachicol (fuel smuggling) and arms trafficking.
As of 2024, the Miss Universe Organization is jointly owned, in equal parts, by the Thai media company JKN and Legacy Holding Group USA Inc., a division of a Mexican company owned by Rocha Cantú.
