United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for the entry of sufficient life-saving humanitarian aid into Gaza.
This came in a message from Guterres on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which the world observes on November 29 of each year. It is an occasion adopted by the United Nations in 1977 to show international support for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, most notably self-determination, national independence, sovereignty, and the return of refugees to their homes from which they were displaced in 1948.

Guterres said, in the message, the text of which was published on the United Nations News website, that “the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People comes this year after two years of horrific suffering in the Gaza Strip, and (after) the start of a ceasefire that was extremely needed.”
He added, “Survivors are now mourning the tens of thousands of friends and relatives who died – nearly a third of them children – in addition to thousands of injured people. The sector is witnessing widespread hunger, disease, psychological trauma, and the spread of the ruins of destroyed schools, homes, and hospitals.”
He added, “A sufficient amount of humanitarian aid necessary to save lives must be allowed to enter Gaza.”
The ceasefire agreement between the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and Israel, which has been in effect since October 10, stipulates the entry of aid into the Gaza Strip, estimated at 600 trucks per day. However, Israel did not adhere to the agreement, and only allowed the entry of 200 trucks per day at most.
Firm stance
Guterres continued in his message, “The international community must continue to stand firmly with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which represents an indispensable lifeline for millions of Palestinians.”
He added, “In many ways, this tragedy has put to the test the standards and laws that have guided the international community for generations. The killing of so many civilians, the repeated displacement of entire populations, and the obstruction of the delivery of humanitarian assistance should never be acceptable under any circumstances.”
Guterres considered that “there is a glimmer of hope provided by the recent ceasefire, which it is now absolutely necessary for all parties to fully respect and work in good faith to reach solutions that restore and adhere to international law.”
He pointed out that “also the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is where injustice is committed without stopping, with the continuation of Israeli military operations, settler violence, settlement expansion, evictions, demolitions and threats of annexation.”
Guterres renewed his call to “end the illegal occupation of the Palestinian Territory – as affirmed by the International Court of Justice and the General Assembly – and to make irreversible progress towards a two-state solution, in line with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, so that Israel and Palestine live side by side in peace and security within their safe and recognized borders, on the basis of the pre-1967 lines, and with Jerusalem as the capital of both states.”
The Israeli war of genocide in Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023 and continued for two years, left more than 69,000 martyrs and about 171,000 Palestinians wounded, most of them children and women, and massive destruction, with the cost of reconstruction estimated by the United Nations at about 70 billion dollars.
The Israeli occupation army and settlers have continued their attacks and escalation in the West Bank for two years, resulting in the killing of more than 1,085 Palestinians, the injury of nearly 11,000 others, and the arrest of more than 21,000.
