BERLIN / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Despite cooler weather in 2025, energy consumption in Germany will decline slightly. The Energy Balances Working Group predicts a decline of 0.1 percent, which is due to a combination of factors that reduce and increase consumption.

Energy consumption in Germany is expected to decline slightly in 2025, despite cooler weather that typically leads to higher heating energy requirements. This forecast comes from the Working Group on Energy Balances (AGEB), which has carried out a comprehensive analysis of current energy patterns. The experts found that without the influence of cooler temperatures, consumption would have fallen by around 1.2 percent.
Another factor that influences energy consumption is the reduced price of fuel, heating oil and natural gas. These price declines may have boosted consumption by making the use of these energy sources more attractive. Nevertheless, the factors that reduce consumption predominate, such as the weak chemical industry, which has reduced the need for petroleum products.
AGEB’s projection shows that total energy consumption will fall by around 0.1 percent to 10,553 petajoules in 2025. Expressed in terawatt hours, this corresponds to 2,931 terawatt hours. For comparison: In 2024, 432 terawatt hours of electricity were fed into the grid in Germany, which illustrates the scale of energy consumption.
A positive trend can be seen in renewable energies, whose share of the energy mix has increased to 20.6 percent. The share of natural gas has also increased slightly, while the share of mineral oil, lignite and hard coal has decreased. These changes in the energy mix have led to a reduction in energy-related CO2 emissions by more than six million tons, which corresponds to a reduction of over one percent compared to the previous year.
