Digantara Industries, an India-based space surveillance company, recently raised $50 million in a Series B funding round. These funds will be used to expand the company’s activities from pure space surveillance to missile defense. Investors include both new and existing partners such as 360 ONE Asset and SBI Investments Co. from Japan.
The company has already established a network of ground-based sensors to track space objects and launched its first satellite, SCOT, for space-based surveillance in January. Now Digantara plans to expand its expertise to develop missile tracking platforms based on infrared sensors and camera technologies.
To achieve these new goals, Digantara has opened an office in Colorado Springs focused on developing missile defense technologies. The company was recently selected by the Missile Defense Agency for the SHIELD program, which aims to promote innovative defense solutions.
The decision to invest in missile defense is based on Digantara’s technical capabilities and significantly larger market potential compared to space surveillance. According to Digantara CEO Anirudh Sharma, defense agencies across the globe are looking for space-based capabilities to complement existing ground-based systems.
Over the next 18 months, the company plans to develop a prototype missile tracking satellite, with launch scheduled for the third or fourth quarter of 2027. This satellite is being developed in the US, while 15 additional surveillance satellites are planned to be produced in India.
Sharma emphasizes that there are synergies between missile defense and space surveillance that have attracted investor interest. Digantara positions itself as a holistic space surveillance and intelligence company built on a common technological foundation.
With the new funding, Digantara plans to increase its headcount in India from 120 to 250 and expand its US office from five to 20 employees. The opening of a European office to participate in the EU space surveillance and tracking program is also being considered.
