Operation Home Cooking is a five-decade tradition that connects the San Antonio community with the youngest members of the U.S. military. Every year, numerous families open their doors to offer recruits a warm Thanksgiving experience. This initiative not only strengthens the bond between the base and the surrounding community, but also provides the young Soldiers with a much-needed break from intensive training.
This year, 708 recruits eagerly waited to be welcomed by 289 welcoming families. These encounters are enriching for both sides. The recruits, often far from their own families, appreciate the opportunity to relax and connect with the outside world in a family environment. For many, it is a way to make new friends and create lasting memories.
Nicole Caldwell and her family have been part of this initiative for five years. They have welcomed a total of 46 recruits, from both the Army and Air Force. These encounters leave a lasting impression, and many of the young soldiers stay in touch with their families even after Thanksgiving. These connections show that home is not just a place, but a feeling that you share with others.
For Logan Jenkins, one of this year’s recruits, the experience was particularly meaningful. Even though he’s from Ohio, he felt welcomed and valued in Texas. This experience taught him that sometimes the most unexpected places can provide the greatest sense of home. For Jenkins and many others, this tradition is a valuable part of their education and personal growth.
