Mexico City, December 15 (However).– The President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo called this Monday to a “moment of reflection” in the progressive movements in Latin America after the elections in Chilewhere the presidential candidate far-right José Antonio Kast got a wide triumph.
“I think it is a moment of reflection for the progressive movements of Latin America about why these circumstances occur. I believe that this is not going to happen in Mexico because, number one, there is a lot of popular support for the Government because we are fulfilling and we have not betrayed what we committed to; number two, there are results: the reduction of poverty, of inequalities, and the majority of Mexicans agree with the transformation that our country is experiencing for that reason,” Sheinbaum said in his morning press conference.
“Each country must be analyzed. Obviously we want there to be more governments close to the people, but that they always be decided in a democratic manner. In the case of Chile, it was a democratic vote. The people of Chile chose who they want to govern them,” he added.
Sheinbaum indicated that in Mexico “there is also unity.” “Sometimes when there is no unity in the movements, this decrease in support is generated and not here. Here we always seek the unity of our movement and always give results. Honesty and results; and never abandon what we committed to and the vision that the Government is there to serve the people. That is the reason why the Government has a lot of popular support and we must analyze in any case what happened in Chile,” he argued.
Far-right candidate José Antonio Kast officially won the second round of Chile’s presidential election held this Sunday with 58.21 percent of the vote, ahead of the 41.79 percent of his rival, left-wing coalition candidate Jeannette Jara.
These data were published by the Electoral Service of Chile (Servel) and correspond to 100 percent of the scrutiny already published on its official website.
The table shows that 12 million 315 thousand 407 valid votes have been cast, of which seven million 168 thousand 865 were for Kast and five million 146 thousand 542 for Jara. The total votes cast include 773,278 invalid votes (5.84 percent) and 163,169 blank votes (1.23 percent).
With this result, Kast confirms the forecasts that predicted his victory in the second round thanks to the support of the right-wing candidates who are not in the second round and despite Jara’s victory in the first vote.
